When the city of Vesāli was haunted by three kind of fears - fear of famine, fear of haunted spirits, fear of pestilence, the citizens and the rulers called Licchavis were in great trouble. Then the Buddha arrived there with a large retinue of his disciples due to which a blissful rained occurred causing the root of the fears go away. Subsequently the Blessed One instructed his personal attendant, venerable Ananda to go around the city chanting the Ratana Sutta and sprinkle the blessed and protective water using Buddha's own bowl. After establishing the normalcy in the city, the Blessed One preached a sermon to the rulers and the citizens using the same sutta.
ever since the Buddhist monks use Ratana Sutta to ward off the evil spirits and bring peace and happiness to afflicted people and houses. Ratana Sutta reflects the noble qualities of the Triple Gem - Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha. Every stanza ends with an assertion (saccakiriya) as follows:
Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.
By this (asseveration of the) truth may there be happiness.)
Today as the whole world is afflicted with an unprecedented disaster with the horrendous COVID 19 (Corona) virus, the Buddhist monks all over the world pray for the innocent victims using this powerful protective paritta. May the entire world be healed by the power and the blessings of this sutta and the noble Triple Gem!

Tasmā hi bhūtā nisāmetha sabbe Mettaṃ karotha mānusiyā pajāya, Divā ca ratto ca haranti ye baliṃ Tasmā hi ne rakkhatha appamattā.
(O beings, listen closely. May you all radiate loving-kindness to those human beings who, by day and night, bring offerings to you (offer merit to you). Wherefore, protect them with diligence.)
(Whatever treasure there be either here or in the world beyond, whatever precious jewel there be in the heavenly worlds, there is nought comparable to the Tathagata (the perfect One). This precious jewel is the Buddha. By this (asseveration of the) truth may there be happiness.)
Khayaṃ virāgaṃ amataṃ paṇītaṃ Yadajjhagā sakyamunī samāhito, Na tena dhammena samatthi kiñcī Idampi dhamme ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.
(That Cessation, that Detachment, that Deathlessness (Nibbana) supreme, the calm and collected Sakyan Sage (the Buddha) had realized. There is nought comparable to this (Nibbana) Dhamma. This precious jewel is the Dhamma. By this (asseveration of the) truth may there be happiness.)
Yaṃ buddhaseṭṭho parivaṇṇayī suciṃ Samādhi mānantarikaññamāhu, Samādhinā tena samo na vijjati Idampi dhamme ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.
(The Supreme Buddha extolled a path of purity (the Noble Eightfold Path) calling it the path which unfailingly brings concentration. There is nought comparable to this concentration. This precious jewel is the Dhamma. By this (asseveration of the) truth may there be happiness.)
(The eight persons extolled by virtuous men constitute four pairs. They are the disciples of the Buddha and are worthy of offerings. Gifts given to them yield rich results. This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this (asseveration of the) truth may there be happiness.)
(With a steadfast mind, and applying themselves well in the dispensation of the Buddha Gotama, free from (defilements), they have attained to that which should be attained (arahantship) encountering the Deathless. They enjoy the Peace of Nibbana freely obtained. This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this (asseveration of the) truth may there be happiness.)
(As a post deep-planted in the earth stands unshaken by the winds from the four quarters, so, too, I declare is the righteous man who comprehends with wisdom the Noble Truths. This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this (asseveration of the) truth may there be happiness.)
Ye ariyasaccāni vibhāvayanti Gambhīrapaññena sudesitāni Kiñcāpi te honti bhusappamattā Na te bhavaṃ aṭṭhamaṃ ādiyanti, Idampi saṅghe ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.
(Those who realized the Noble Truths well taught by him who is profound in wisdom (the Buddha), even though they may be exceedingly heedless, they will not take an eighth existence (in the realm of sense spheres). (With his gaining of insight he abandons three states of mind, namely self-illusion, doubt, and indulgence in meaningless rites and rituals, should there be any. He is also fully freed from the four states of woe, and therefore, incapable of committing the six major wrongdoings. This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this (asseveration of the) truth may there be happiness.)
(Any evil action he may still do by deed, word or thought, he is incapable of concealing it; since it has been proclaimed that such concealing is impossible for one who has seen the Path (of Nibbana). This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this (asseveration of the) truth may there be happiness.)
(As the woodland groves though in the early heat of the summer month are crowned with blossoming flowers even so is the sublime Dhamma leading to the (calm) of Nibbana which is taught (by the Buddha) for the highest good. (Their past (kamma) is spent, their new (kamma) no more arises, their mind to future becoming is unattached. Their germ (of rebirth-consciousness) has died, they have no more desire for re-living. Covid 19 or Corona is taking its toll at the moment causing mass-hysteria around the world with ever increasing number of infected cases and deaths with a staggering pace. The epicenter is being shifted from China to Italy. Is it shifting towards US? We never know, but everyone is worried and stressed. We are currently receiving heartbreaking news all the time. There are more alarming threats related to this pandemic as the stock markets, job markets and family life have been shaken in numerous ways. Different governments are implementing quarantine, police curfew and lockdown to curb the situation as against the deadly virus infection which has so far been able to evade all precautions and safety methods. People are panicked after having seeing the top trending news regarding this. All entertainment programs such as musical shows, sports events and numerous social gatherings have been banned or limited by the respective governments to mitigate this unprecedented phenomenon at least for the last hundred years.
It's natural for us to feel worried, stressed and panicked as against the impending loss of jobs, house arresting leaving nothing much to do but to worry about our bills, loans and other expenses.

The world today is haunted and scared by the Corona Outbreak in a number of countries today with over 3110 people deaths reported so far according to Al Jazeera and the death toll in USA has risen to 9 according to New York Times. China, Italy, South Korea, Japan and many other countries have been affected very badly and people all over the world are scared and panicked with the global economy being affected to a considerable extent. Tourism dependent countries have been encountered by an alarming economic collapse and the situation looks even more frightening given the complexity of the case. Every single day we hear reports of the rising death toll and more and more people been diagnosed with (92000 according to New York Times) the virus which has not yet been addressed adequately by the healthcare sector in these countries since the phenomenon is unprecedented.
Everywhere people do things to help the countries and the victims and we the Lankarama Buddhist Institute also decided to pray for them specifically to send our good will to all those who suffer. Hence, we will start chanting the 3 unique Bojjhaṅga Suttas that we find in the Sutta Piṭaka to heal the innocent people all over the world. These three BojjhaṅgaSuttas are:
Mahā Kassapatthera Bojjhaṅga Sutta was preached by the Buddha when venerable Mahā Kassapa was sick at the Gijjhakuṭa Pabbata (Vulture's Peak) in Rājagaha (modern day Rajgir) which is included with Seven Factors of Enlightenment (Satta Bojjhaṅga) while venerable Moggallāna was also healed by the Buddha by chanting the same seven factors of enlightenment. The third sutta incorporates the story of the Buddha and when the Buddha himself was sick venerable Cunda came to him and preached the seven factors of enlightenment.
Hence, the monks used to preach the Bojjhaṅgaparittas when someone was sick. Hopefully our efforts to heal these innocent Corona virus will be effective with more of your consideration to participate with us together. Remember, there's no guarantee for your safety too although you have been lucky to escape. Hence, let's get together and pray for the whole world for peace, happiness, safety and good health from this devastating suffering. Please bring some flowers, candles and incense and even some herbal medicinal drinks to be offered to the Triple Gem if you are planning to join us on any of these days from March 4 - 10, 2020.
If you are planning to join us from your home, please arrange a clean and quiet place at your home and arrange a small altar with a little Buddha statue (if you have) and sit on a cushion on the floor if you can or sit on a chair if you can't sit on the floor and play the following videos on the above suttas and read the following texts and meditate for a while at the end send those innocent people everywhere in the world a good positive energy of your compassion and loving kindness so that they may feel some respite.

Then the Blessed One, arising from His solitude at even tide, visited the Venerable Mahā Kassapa and sat down on a seat made ready for Him. Thus seated, the Blessed One spoke to the Venerable Mahā Kassapa:
Kacci te Kassapa khamanīyam? Kacci yāpaniyam? Kacci dukkhā vedanā patikkamanti no, abhikkamanti? Patikkamosānam paññāyati no, abhikkamo’ti?
“Well Kassapa, how is it with you? Are you enduring your suffering? Are you bearing up? Does your painful feeling decrease or increase? Are there signs of decreasing and not increasing?”
Na me bhante khamanīyam na, yāpanīyam, bālhā me dukkhā vedanā, abhikkamanti no, patikkamanti; Abhikkamosānam paññāyati no, patikkamo’ti.
“No. Venerable Sir, I am not enduring. I am not bearing up, the painful feeling is very great. There is a sign of pain not decreasing but of their increasing.”
"Kassapa, these seven factors of Enlightenment are well expounded by Me, and are cultivated and fully developed by Me. They are conducive to perfect understanding, to full realization and to Nibbana"

Thus said the Buddha, and also the Venerable Mahā Moggallāna, who glad at heart, was delighted at the utterances of the Buddha. Thereupon the Venerable Mahā Moggallāna recovered from that affliction, and that affliction of the Venerable Mahā Moggallāna disappeared.

Mahā Cundatthera Bojjhaṅga Sutta Text
Evam me sutam, ekam samayam Bhagavā Rājagahe viharati Veluvane Kalandakanivāpe. Tena kho pana samayena Bhagavā ābādhiko hoti dukkhito bālhagilāno.
Thus, have I heard: On one occasion the Blessed One was residing at the Squirrels’ feeding ground in the Bamboo Grove, near Rajagaha. At that time, He was afflicted with a disease, was suffering therefrom, and was gravely ill.
Then the Venerable Mahā Cunda, arising from his solitude at even tide, approached the Blessed One, saluted Him, and sat on one side. To Venerable Mahā Cunda thus seated, the Blessed One said: “O Cunda, let the factors of Enlightenment occur to your mind.”
“These seven factors of Enlightenment, Venerable Sir, are well expounded, and are cultivated and fully developed by the Blessed One. They conduce to perfect understanding, to full realization and to Nibbana."
Mindfulness, the factor of Enlightenment, Venerable Sir, is well expounded, cultivated and fully developed by the Blessed One. It conduces to perfect understanding, to full realization and to Nibbana.
Investigation of the Dhamma, the factor of Enlightenment. Venerable Sir, is well expounded, cultivated and fully developed by the Blessed One. It conduces to perfect understanding, to full realization and to Nibbana.
Persevering effort, the factor of Enlightenment, Venerable Sir, is well expounded, cultivated and fully developed by the Blessed One. It conduces to perfect understanding, to full realization and to Nibbana.
Rapture, the factor of Enlightenment, Venerable Sir, is well expounded, cultivated and fully developed by the Blessed One. It conduces to perfect understanding, to full realization and to Nibbana.
Tranquility, the factor of Enlightenment, Venerable Sir, is well expounded, cultivated and fully developed by the Blessed One. It conduces to perfect understanding, to full realization and to Nibbana.
Concentration, the factor of Enlightenment, Venerable Sir, is well expounded, cultivated and fully developed by the Blessed One. It conduces to perfect understanding, to full realization and to Nibbana.
Equanimity, the factor of Enlightenment, Venerable Sir, is well expounded, cultivated and fully developed by the Blessed One. It conduces to perfect understanding, to full realization and to Nibbana.
These seven factors of Enlightenment, Venerable Sir, are well expounded, cultivated and fully developed by the Blessed One. They conduce to perfect understanding, to full realization and to Nibbana.”
“Most assuredly. Cunda, they are factors of Enlightenment. Most assuredly, Cunda, they are factors of Enlightenment.”
Idamavo cāyasmā Mahācundo Samanuñño Satthā ahosi. Vutthāhi ca Bhagavā tamhā ābādhā tathā pahīno ca Bhagavato so ābādho ahosī ti.
Thus said the Venerable Mahā Cunda, and the Teacher approved of it. Then the Blessed One recovered from His affliction, and thus disappeared His affliction.

He, possesses the power to bring about happiness, glory, victory, wisdom
and mindfulness,possessor of endless virtues and merit
and is capable of averting all dangers.
Such indeed is the Blessed One, the Supreme Enlightened Buddha.
By the power of this protection, may you be free from all dangers arising from malign influences of the planets, demons and powerful spirits. May your misfortunes vanish.
